Bride’s Return Home

Traditionally, the bride returns to her family home for a visit three days after the wedding, a custom known as 三朝回门 (sān zhāo huí mén), or simply 回门 (huí mén). However, this tradition has evolved over the years, and it is now common for the bride and groom to return to her home on the same day of the wedding— after completing the 过门 (guò mén) ceremony and its related rituals at the groom’s home.

To symbolize the passing of three days, the bride typically changes into a 裙褂 (qún guà), a modern cheongsam, or another wedding dress before returning home. Upon arrival, the tea ceremony 敬茶 (jìng chá) - read more here for her family members takes place. Traditionally, this tea ceremony serves as the groom’s formal introduction to the bride’s family.

After completing the 回门 (huí mén) visit and tea ceremony at the bride’s family home, the couple will then proceed to their wedding banquet, where they will celebrate their union with family and friends.
